The first and central Yellowstone is a super volcano that appeared about 640 thousand years ago.
The second Yellowstone is the world's first national park, which was established in the volcano's caldera on March 1, 1872.
Yellowstone, in its formidable beauty, is alive. You can hardly doubt it when you hear the grumbling and bubbling of mud volсanoes, watch flows of geothermal water that change color depending on their temperature, and learn about the three thousand (!) active geysers which, from time to time, used to shoot jets of hot water into the air without warning.
Wolves and lynxes feel at home here, bison roam the area, which is their native land,
and grizzly bears play a kind of mind game with humans.
Park officials have struggled with the design of the garbage bins, trying to make them secure from the shaggy hosts of the forest. So far, however, the bears are still winning this technological war!
How to get to Yellowstone:
You can easily reach the park by rental car (or in your own car, if you are a resident of the USA).
The cost of car rentals and fuel in the USA is quite cheap compared to Europe, the roads are perfect and the people are more than friendly. The drive from Salt Lake City to the park takes about five hours (320 miles).
Alternatively, you can fly from the major US airports to the Yellowstone Airport using Delta, United or Alaska Airlines.
Where to stay:
There is no accommodation within the national park. However, you can find a lot of lodging nearby.
Weather in Yellowstone area:
I have been to the park during the summer and found that to be the best time to visit it. This is the northern part of the USA, and I'm afraid that the winter may be too cold and require you to have chains for the wheels of your vehicle.
- Note that there are no petrol stations anywhere in the park, which is 8,983 km², so be sure that you have a full tank before you enter.
- It's best not to stay in remote areas of the park in a tent: Grizzlies are not as friendly as they look in the pictures.
