The main reason to come here is that it is only the entrance to this part of the Amazonian jungle.
The Walk of Fame, with its gorgeous panorama of the Madre de Dios River, is especially impressive at dawn. The famous Puente Continental is a 722 m bridge crossing the Madre de Dios. Being built in 2012 and known as the local "Golden Gate", it has made Puerto Maldonado a part of the Interoceanic Highway.
Puerto Maldonado is the best for:
Starting your jungle journey: even if you didn't book your trip beforehand, you could easily find a lot of tourist offices that will offer a selection of proposals.
How to get there:
The flight from the international airport in Lima is carried out by two airlines: Avianca and Star Peru. The taxi from the airport to the center of town costs about ten soles (2.5 EUR) and takes about 15 minutes.
Where to stay in Puerto Maldonado:
I suggest Wasai Hotel, which is nice, clean and meets Western standards of accommodation.
Weather and climate:
The climate is wet and hot, with an average annual temperature of 26°C to 28°ะก.
Advice:
Puerto Maldonado is very safe, especially compared to Lima. But if you skip seeing the town and spend more time in the rainforest, you will not miss anything important.
